Coleoptera related to xylotrophic fungi of the genus Fomitopsis (Fr.) P. Kumm. (Basidiomycetes, Agaricales) in the South Urals

The research was conducted in the territories of 22 municipal districts of the Chelyabinsk region, including 11 protected natural areas at different times from 1990 to 2024. It has been established that in the South Urals 48 species of beetles from 17 families are associated with 4 species of xylotrophic basidial fungi of the genus Fomitopsis (Fr.) P. Kumm. (F. betulina, F. cajanderi, F. pinicola, F. rosea). The maximum number of species (38) has been identified for F. betulina, but 18 species from 7 families are developing in them. There are 34 species of Coleoptera associated with F. pinicola fungi, 20 of which develop in (on) basidiomas. In F. cajanderi fungi, 6 species from 4 families were found (5 species develop in fruit bodies), in F. rosea fungi – 5 species from 3 families (4 species develop in fruit bodies). In terms of occurrence rates, the hidden-living mycetosaprophages Dacne bipustulata (Erotylidae) and Diaperis boleti (Tenebrionidae) predominate in the fungi F. betulina and F. pinicola; Cis jacquemarti, Dolichocis laricinus, Ennearthron cornutum, Rhopalodontus strandi (Ciidae), Thymalus oblongus (Trogossitidae) and the open-living mycetophage Scaphisoma agaricinum (Staphylinidae) have a slightly lower specific significance. The fungi F. rosea and F. cajanderi are dominated by C. jacquemarti, D. laricinus and E. cornutum, characteristic of all the species of the genus Fomitopsis studied by us. Only at the imago stage 23 species from 15 families were found on (in) fungi. Among them, a special place is occupied by xylomycetophilic beetles developing in the mycelial layer of fungi of the genus Fomitopsis and some other woody fungi. These are 13 species from the families Carabidae, Staphylinidae, Trogossitidae, Cerylonidae, Cucujidae, Nitidulidae, Monotomidae, Colydiidae, Melandryidae and enebrionidae). The main dietary regimes in this group are obligate mycetophagy and myxomycetophagy, myxophagy (mycetophagy and predation, sapro-xylo-mycetophagy, sapro-xylo-mycetophagy and necrophagia), predation, detritophagy and facultative sapro-mycetophagy. The remaining 10 species from the families Staphylinidae, Geotrupidae, Scirtidae, Nitidulidae, Latridiidae, Ciidae, Mycetophagidae are either obligate mycetophages of other fungal species, or facultative mycetophages, sometimes using fungi of the genus Fomitopsis as an additional food resource.
